I'd bend over backwards to celebrate Individuality

A few weeks ago I was giving a private class with a focus on backbends and shoulder openers. Backbends are a wonderful way to stretch out the body, activate glands and if done correctly they're healthy for the spine. Through backbends we become more energetic. But they can also be scary and bring up different and unexpected emotions.

With office jobs and sitting at the desk or on the couch all day our shoulders slouch forward and our front body collapses. Over time we loose energy and almost hide our heart between the shoulders. Finally our head drops and so does our self-esteem and confidence. Quickly it's a downward spiral.

Enter backbends and shoulder openers!

Backbends open up our individual, this vulnerable front side of the body. They expose us. To the whole world it seems. The experience can be scary at first and here's something I found critical to opening in backbends: having a strong core and foundation. If we have stability in our core and stability in ourselves (read: our self) – opening the heart to the world is something uplifting. And then, while opening up, at the same time we find the support of our universal side – our back.

I was curious what the reaction to the class may be. When we finished my student smiled at me with the widest grin and said 'that was soooo liberating! I feel great.' There you go. Trust your core, open your heart and then go into the world to celebrate your individuality.
